The rate above is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between the prices at which banks buy and sell each currency. No transfer service pays it exactly. Each takes a margin on the rate, and many add a fee on top.

So compare services by what arrives, not by the fee: how many Guinean francs the recipient gets for the same number of dollars. A transfer advertised as free usually makes its money on the rate.

For example, 200 CAD at the reference rate is 1,243,145 GNF. A service offering 1,205,850 GNF for the same 200 dollars is keeping about 3% of it.

Since January

against the US dollar

A Canadian dollar buys fewer Guinean francs than it did in January.

Against the US dollar since January, the Canadian dollar has weakened 3.4%, and the Guinean franc has weakened 1.0%.

We give the direction, not a figure: the two moves are measured separately against the US dollar, and folding them into one number would claim more precision than they have.

About the Guinean franc

Legal tender in Guinea.

Guinea is not part of the CFA franc zone. It left the franc zone in 1960 and has issued its own currency ever since, today through the Banque Centrale de la République de Guinée. Unlike the CFA franc, the Guinean franc is not fixed to the euro, so its rate against the Canadian dollar moves with both currencies.
