Before you change money

The rate above is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between the prices at which banks buy and sell each currency. No transfer service pays it exactly. Each takes a margin on the rate, and many add a fee on top.

So changing CFA francs into dollars, at a bureau or through a transfer service, you will get fewer dollars than this page shows. Compare offers by the dollars that arrive, not by the fee.

About the West African CFA franc

Legal tender in Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo.

It is pegged to the euro at 655.957 francs per euro, a parity fixed since the euro's launch in 1999. So a Canadian dollar buys more francs exactly when it buys more euros: this rate is the Canadian dollar's euro rate multiplied by 655.957, and it moves only when that does.

The Central African CFA franc (XAF), used in Cameroon and five other countries, has the same peg and so exactly the same value. It is still a different currency, issued by a different central bank, and its notes are not legal tender in West Africa.
